The OCIMF Hose Guide states maximum flow velocity of 21 m/s for nominal hose bores up to 400mm, and 15 m/s flow velocity for nominal hose bores greater than 400mm. This limits maximum throughput for any given hose bore size.

It is unusual for flow velocity in offshore loading hose strings to be at the OCIMF recommended maximum due to the associated magnitudes of friction induced pressure losses.

This can be a particularly important factor for a system having a relatively long, small diameter sea bed pipeline.
